Kate Rose founder of lifestyle brand Tutti & Co.

“Loving…I have been using this new skincare brand, after a recommendation from a close friend. I’ve tried many lotions and potions, but nothing comes close to this 100% natural, vegan skincare.  The owner of this special range created a unique formula after suffering with severe acne for many years.  Having tried acid peels, microdermabrasion, prescribed antibiotics, lotions, gels – and spending thousands of pounds on expensive branded products.  With no solution, she turned to Mother Nature, and now has beautifully toned, youthful, glowing, well nourished, happy, scar free skin.  All made from carefully chosen natural oils, the list of benefits – from reducing pigmentation and dark circles to firming and hydrating the skin – is vast.  You can buy a starter pack to try the 3 step cleanse, you won’t be disappointed.”

SKIN, NUTRITION & NATURE

MY STORY

After studying natural skincare therapies in India, I decided to make my own natural blends inspired by Mother Nature.  The unblemished journey started as a personal journey, it wasn’t my intention to sell these products.

In my late 20’s, I suffered with aggressive acne on my face and back.  This started to impact my mental health as nothing I tried was working.  The doctor prescribed me with gels and creams that were thinning and ageing my skin.  As a result, I was left with pigmentation and severe scars.  I was paranoid about how bad my skin looked and some days I wouldn’t leave my house.  For several years I spent 6 months in Spain and 6 months in India, whilst in India my skincare journey truly began.  I discovered mother nature, all of her nutrition and what I was doing wrong.  I was taking from my skin with microdermabrasion acid peels face scrubs and prescribed abrasive gels, but what was I giving to my skin?

I now view my skin as an organ, a living breathing organ that needs nutrition, nourishment and food.  The skin requires natural ingredients to heal. Ingredients that nourish and feed the skin, not man made chemicals and treatments.  My skin needed healing and healing is best prescribed through Mother Nature.

Mother Nature provides everything we need to have healthy, happy and beautiful skin. She bares this in fruits on her trees, in her soil and in her waters.  MOTHER NATURE “mother, she gives nourishes and cares for”.

On my return to the UK from India, I opened a small yoga studio.  My yoga students would ask what I used on my skin and I would make up bottles of VIO moisture boost. Soon enough I was giving out bottles of pre-cleanse and skin tonic.  As the products grew in popularity, I decided to sell them.

what does the symbol represent

The Mandala like Sigil (Sigil is a marking or symbol that captures a specific energy or intention) is a spiritual and ritualistic symbol, representing the universe.  The circular design supports the idea that life is never ending and everything is connected.  The sigil also represents expansion and the spiritual journey within the individual viewer.

toxic and harmful ingredients used in skin and body care

You won’t find any toxins, alcohols, gumming agents, binding agents, preservatives, shelf life enhancers, alcohols or any chemicals alike in any of unblemished products.

Sometimes navigating our way through all the masses of skincare can be a tricky business. Here are some key things to look out for in your skincare ingredients.

  • Lanolin.  A waxy substance derived from sheep wool.  Lanolin can cause skin irritation.  Lanolin is extracted by washing the wool in hot water with a wool scouring detergent to remove dirt, crease (crude lanolin), sweat, salts and anything else stuck in the wool.  The wax is then obtained using either centrifugal separation or solvent extraction.  Lanolin and it’s related ingredients are widely used in the formulation of personal products.  Lanolin can be found in baby care, skincare, shaving, manicuring, hair care, sun tan and sunscreen products as well as eye, lip and facial make-up.
  • Linalool is in 60-80% of skincare and is used as a scent.  According to a toxicity conducted in 1995, linalool caused skin irritation in humans.
  • Limonene can cause sensiticity and is best avoided, limonene has strong antioxidant benefits and has also been shown to calm skin; however, when exposed to air these highly volatile antioxidant compounds oxidize and become capable of sensitizing skin. Limonene is a fragrance allergen found naturally in the oils of citrus fruits and widely used in scented products, it can cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Symptoms can cause skin irritation, rashes, eye irritation and respiratory issues. It is highly irritating to those with dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, acne and other skin conditions.
  • Alcohols like ethanol isopropyl alcohol, alcohol denat, and methanol are used to make creams feel lighter and help other ingredients to penetrate your skin.  Also used as a preservative, these alcohols can cause dryness, skin irritation and breakouts.
  • Polyethylene and Polypropylene are the two main types of plastic to look out for in skincare and body care ingredients. These are micro plastics or micro beaded plastics used in exfoliators and in toothpastes.  Be cautions with exfoliators with sharp or hard particles such as apricot seeds or kernels, walnut shells and avocado pits as they can cause microscopic tears in the skin.
  • Phenoxyethanol is a colourless oily liquid, it is known to cause allergic-type reactions on the skin in some people.  Some argue that these bad reactions are the result of allergies in the test subjects.  Others argue that it’s simply a skin irritant that affects different people at different levels.  Used as an anti-bacterial in cosmetics and stabilizer in perfumes, Phenoxyethanol is actually very harmful. It is harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through skin, especially to nursing mothers or infants. Phenoxyethanol can have an effect on the brain and the central nervous system.  It irritates skin and eyes, and can cause blistering on skin as well.  As an ethoxylated compound, Phenoxyethanol can contain trace amounts of 1,4-dioxane which is a known carcinogen.  If your skin is already sensitive because of eczema, avoid products with higher concentrations of phenoxyethanol.  How Bad Is It?  Phenoxyethanol is a potential skin irritant, nervous system suppressant, and long term use has been connected to longer to influence the females ability to conceive.   Phenoxyethanol is synthetic preservative commonly used as a paraben substitute in commercial skincare.  Phenoxyethanol is also associated with reproductive damage and genetic mutation in mice.  Phenoxyethanol in baby wipes is becoming even more common as manufacturers try to avoid parabens. It’s an irritant, and shouldn’t be used around the mouth. It can also depress the central nervous system in infants, so really shouldn’t be used on babies.
  • Mineral oil or white oil sounds like it’s pretty good to use on our skin and why wouldn’t it, minerals are good for us, after all. I mean it does have a cool name!  Mineral oil unfortunately is anything but good for our skin and I find this name extremely misleading.  Mineral oil is a byproduct of crude oil, you see crude oil is expensive to dispose of so oil companies started selling it to skincare companies who buy it for pennies.  This oil helps reduce water loss by binding moisture to the skin.  So, unless you like smearing a crude oil byproducts onto your skin, you might want to look at the ingredients of your skin and body care collections.  If that’s not enough and you need another reason to ditch mineral oil.  Mineral oil is often contaminated with other chemicals, just think all of the chemicals that are used to produce crude oil, and you are putting that on your skin every morning and night without knowing. You wouldn’t believe that some of the largest and most successful skin manufacturers use this mineral oil in abundance in a lot of their products!  Most often, mineral oil is a liquid by-product of refining crude oil to make gasoline and other petroleum products.  This type of mineral oil is a transparent, colourless oil, composed mainly of alkanes and cycloalkanes, related to petroleum jelly.  Why is mineral oil so Controversial? The fact is that mineral oil is a byproduct of gasoline is the issue.
  • Xanthan gum is used as a tickening agent, texture enhancer and to stabilise emulsifiers. Common symptoms of xanthan gum  can include skin reactions such as itching and rashes. Xanthan gum is to be avoided go those with acne and sensitive skin.
  • SLS and SLES.  SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or SLE (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) are compounds formed from petroleum and plant sources such as coconut and palm oil.  They are used in skincare products to create a lather when used on your skin, such as shampoo, body wash, face wash, mouthwash and toothpaste.  This gives us the illusion of being cleaned because we associate soapy suds with cleanliness.  Although it’s a myth that they’re carcinogens, sulfate compounds can cause skin irritation, particularly around your eyes and mouth.  This is because they strip your skin of the natural oils that it needs for protection, giving you that ‘squeaky clean’ feeling, when in fact your skin is too clean. This can cause major skin irritation, particularly if you’re prone to reactions, or have sensitive skin, and can also contribute to acne.

I am a firm believer that these ingredients do not have a place in skincare. Alison
